E-Commerce Solutions
Our first shopping carts were custom written using Perl, and since then we have implemented numerous online solutions using both custom and off-the-shelf systems in a variety of languages. Security is of paramount concern when implementing an e-commerce solution, and it is important that sites comply with industry-standard PCI compliance guidelines. For this reason it generally makes sense these days to deploy an off-the-shelf system that is PCI-compliant and that is actively supported. This makes it much more cost-effective to implement security patches and to prevent against vulnerabilities.
The following are some of the e-commerce packages that VMT actively deploys:
| Zen Cart™ is a robust and user-friendly open source shopping cart system that is a derivative of an older system called osCommerce. Written in PHP, it runs on a variety of platforms. Zen Cart uses a template engine that allows you to apply and update the overall look and feel of your Web site with minimal effort. Its administrative interface allows non-technical users to manage the cart with minimal training. With hundreds of modules to choose from, you can build a Web site with minimal custom programming. Zen Cart also has a built in simple interface for content management systems. | |
| Drupal's Ubercart module is an e-commerce suite developed for Drupal. It has been designed with the end user in mind, focusing on usability in three key areas: store configuration, product and catalog creation, and order administration. Ubercart out of the box is a great solution for stores that sell physical goods, digital product downloads, and site memberships. | |
| AspDotNetStorefront's e-commerce platform has been in production since 1997, so it's field tested on a wide range of stores, and a wide range of store types. It is easily customizable and provides a very broad range of built in features. It is a great solution for Windows-based environments. |
