How to Install the New Facebook Like Box on Your Drupal Website

You may have read our recent blog post on the SocialToaster website about the new Facebook enhancements, namely the new “like” button and box that can be installed on any website and linked with any company’s corporate Facebook presence, allowing visitors to “like” the corporate Facebook page without ever leaving the company site. You may be wondering if you need technical help to install the Like box. The answer is no, if you are running a content management system like Drupal or WordPress and feel relatively comfortable using the basic features of the CMS like creating content and blocks. You can install the Like box by following just a few simple steps:

First you need to go to the section of the Facebook Developer site that is dedicated to social plugins, by clicking here. Select the Like Box from the list of options in the left column. Then enter your Facebook page ID number. This is the 12 digit number that appears in your Facebook page URL. Simply copy and paste it into the Page ID Box. If you have a customized Facebook URL you can find your page ID by scrolling over the profile picture on your page and looking at the bottom of your browser for the 12 digit number. Next select the width of the box, the number of connection you would like to display in the box, whether you would like the stream (your recent page updates) to show, and whether you would like the header of “Find Us on Facebook” to appear.

Once you have set the box to appear as you want it, click the Get Code button. A pop up will appear with two types of code. For Drupal you will use the first one provided, called iframe.

Next you need to log into your Drupal site and create a block in which your Facebook box will appear. For tips on creating blocks click here. Once you have created the block and determined where and on which pages it will appear you can copy and paste the iframe code in the Block Body box. It is important to note that you must maximize the input format box below the Block Body and select PHP Code as the input code.

Finally, click Save Block, and then click Save Blocks on the main block list page and your new Facebook Like box will appear on your site.
